Sonoma Coast Road Trip: Sea Ranch to Bodega Bay
Highway 1 between The Sea Ranch and Bodega Bay is about 35 miles of some of the best coastal driving in California. The road runs along bluffs, drops into coves, crosses the Russian River at Jenner, and passes through Sonoma Coast State Park before reaching the harbor at Bodega Bay. You can drive it straight in under an hour, but that's not the point. Plan a full day and stop often.
Start: The Sea Ranch Bluff Trail
If you're staying at The Sea Ranch, start the morning on the bluff trail. The six county beach access points are open to the public, but guests of our homes can walk the private trail network that connects them. Low tide is the best time for tidepooling at Shell Beach or Pebble Beach. Twofish Baking in Gualala opens at 8 AM and sells out of croissants by 9, so stop there before you head south.
Gualala Point Regional Park
Just south of Gualala, the regional park sits at the mouth of the Gualala River. There's a good beach on the river side, a bluff trail with views north and south, and a campground if you want to extend the trip. The river mouth is a good spot for harbor seals in winter and spring.
Sea View Terrace and the Fort Ross Area
Fort Ross State Historic Park is about 12 miles south of Gualala. The Russian-era fort is well preserved and the interpretive center is worth 30 minutes. The cove below the fort is one of the few protected swimming spots on this stretch of coast. Timber Cove, just south, has a dramatic headland and a hotel bar worth stopping at for a drink.
Jenner and the River Mouth
Where the Russian River meets the Pacific at Jenner, harbor seals haul out on the sandbars from March through August. The overlook above the river mouth is a reliable spot to see them. Cafe Aquatica in Jenner is a good coffee stop. From here, Highway 116 heads east through the redwoods to Guerneville if you want to add the river to the trip.
Sonoma Coast State Park: Goat Rock to Salmon Creek
The stretch of Highway 1 from Jenner south to Bodega Bay passes through Sonoma Coast State Park. Goat Rock Beach at the river mouth is the most dramatic. Portuguese Beach and Schoolhouse Beach are smaller and often less crowded. Salmon Creek Beach at the south end of the park has dunes and surf. None of these beaches are safe for swimming due to sneaker waves and rip currents, but they're worth stopping for.
Finish: Bodega Bay Harbor
Pull into Bodega Bay in the late afternoon. Spud Point Crab Company on the harbor is the right call for Dungeness crab and clam chowder. The Fishetarian Fish Market on Bodega Avenue is a good alternative. Watch the fishing boats come in and call it a day.
Practical Notes
The drive is best on a weekday. Summer weekends bring Bay Area traffic that can slow Highway 1 significantly, especially between Bodega Bay and Jenner. Fill up on gas before you leave Gualala or Guerneville. Cell service is spotty for most of the drive. Download an offline map before you go.
