The Sea Ranch is ten miles of protected Sonoma Coast in California where the houses were designed to disappear into the landscape — weathered timber, sod roofs, and windows aimed at the Pacific. Our collection spans the whole ranch, from blufftop house rentals above the surf to quiet retreats in the meadows and pine forest, plus neighboring Gualala just across the river.
Every home here is managed by our own team, based on Highway 1 in Gualala. We handle the hot tubs, the trail access questions, and the check-in hiccups ourselves — you book direct with the people who actually take care of the house, and you skip the booking-site service fee doing it.
Walk the Bluff Top Trail from your door, watch whales in spring, and settle in by the fire when the fog rolls through. Most homes welcome dogs, and many have hot tubs and dedicated ocean views.
The Sea Ranch sits on the Sonoma Coast in California, 2.5 hours north of San Francisco. Walk the bluff trails, step into the Sea Ranch Chapel, watch gray whales between December and May, and end the day at the Lodge. The community covers ten miles of designed coastline, and guests of our homes can use the private trail network day visitors can't.
Gualala is the working town on the Mendocino side of the county line, where the Gualala River meets the Pacific. Walk the trails at Gualala Point, paddle the estuary, and stock the kitchen at the two groceries this whole stretch of coast depends on. The Sea Ranch starts just south of the river bridge.
Shell Beach is where we send people for tide pools. Black Point and Pebble still drop to open sand. Stengel and the Walk-On beach stairs are closed in 2026. Read the Arena Cove tide table before you go, and treat the Pacific as cold water you watch from dry rock, not a swimming coast.
Pay the day fee at Gualala Point for the easy estuary loop. Take the Bluff Top when you want three miles of headland, and turn around before the closed Walk-On beach stairs. Salt Point is the long trail day south. Stay back from bluff edges, and bring layers for fog and wind.
