Best Wineries Near Healdsburg
Healdsburg sits at the junction of three appellations: Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Russian River Valley. You can taste all three in a day without driving more than 30 minutes from the plaza. These are the rooms worth booking, organized by valley so you can plan a route.
A note on reservations: most tasting rooms in Sonoma now require them, and the popular ones fill up weeks ahead on weekends. Book before you leave home. Walk-ins still work at some of the smaller producers, but don't count on it on a Saturday in summer.
Dry Creek Valley
Dry Creek Valley is a narrow canyon northwest of Healdsburg, lined with old Zinfandel vines and olive trees. The road is two lanes and the tasting rooms are close together. It's the most concentrated winery day from Healdsburg.
Quivira Vineyards and Winery
Quivira is certified biodynamic and has been farming this way since 2000. The Zinfandel tastes like the valley smells in September: dark fruit, pepper, and something earthy underneath. The tasting room is relaxed and the staff knows the wines. Book ahead on weekends.
Preston Farm and Winery
Preston is a working farm as much as a winery. They bake bread in a wood-fired oven, press their own olive oil, and grow most of what they sell. The wines are honest and not expensive. The tasting is poured at a long table in the barn. No appointment needed on weekdays, but call ahead on weekends.
Ridge Vineyards Lytton Springs
Ridge's Lytton Springs property in Dry Creek is one of the best addresses for old-vine Zinfandel in California. The tasting room is simple and the wines are serious. Book ahead. The Geyserville blend is the one to try if you want to understand what this valley does.
Ferrari-Carano Vineyards and Winery
Ferrari-Carano has the most elaborate gardens in Dry Creek Valley, which makes it a good stop if you're traveling with someone who wants to walk around as much as taste. The Fumé Blanc is the house specialty. Reservations recommended.
Alexander Valley
Alexander Valley is warmer and flatter than Dry Creek, with Cabernet Sauvignon as the signature grape. The valley runs north from Healdsburg along the Russian River, and the tasting rooms are more spread out.
Jordan Vineyard and Winery
Jordan is the classic Alexander Valley estate: a French-style chateau, a serious Cabernet program, and a library tasting that goes back decades. The estate tour is the full experience. Book well ahead, especially for the library tasting. The Chardonnay is also worth trying.
Stonestreet Estate Vineyards
Stonestreet is up in the mountains above the valley floor, which means the drive is part of the experience and the views are the best in Alexander Valley. The mountain Cabernets are concentrated and age well. Book the mountain tasting if you want to understand what elevation does to the grape.
Simi Winery
Simi is one of the oldest wineries in Sonoma County, founded in 1876. The tasting room is in Healdsburg, which makes it an easy first or last stop. The Landslide Vineyard Cabernet is the flagship. Reservations recommended.
Russian River Valley
Russian River Valley is the cool-climate appellation south of Healdsburg, where the morning fog from the Pacific keeps temperatures low enough for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The wineries are on Westside Road, which runs along the river.
Williams Selyem
Williams Selyem is the benchmark for Russian River Pinot Noir. The wines are allocation-only and the tasting is appointment-only for mailing list members. If you're on the list, this is the stop. If you're not, get on it and plan ahead for next time.
Gary Farrell Vineyards and Winery
Gary Farrell is on Westside Road with views over the river valley that make the drive worthwhile on their own. The Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are both serious, and the tasting room is open to the public with a reservation. Book ahead for weekends.
Rochioli Vineyard and Winery
Rochioli is the other name on Westside Road, and their Pinot Noir is among the most sought-after in California. The tasting room is small and the allocation list is long. Call ahead and ask what's available. If you can get in, go.
Lynmar Estate
Lynmar is a quieter stop on the Russian River Valley circuit, with a garden tasting room and a Pinot program that focuses on single-vineyard wines. The estate garden is worth a walk. Book ahead.
Practical notes
- Book tasting rooms before you leave home. Weekends in summer fill up, and the good ones don't take walk-ins.
- Dry Creek Road and Westside Road are narrow two-lane roads with cyclists. Drive slowly and pass carefully.
- Most tasting fees run $30 to $75 per person and are waived or credited with a purchase. Budget accordingly.
- A designated driver or a car service makes the day easier and safer. Several Healdsburg-based car services run winery tours.
- The Healdsburg Farmers Market runs Saturdays 8:30 to noon at the plaza, year-round. It's the right start to a winery day.
